So you booked a portrait session—awesome! or at least about to do it. Whether it’s for your personal brand, a fresh update, or just because you want to look like the best version of yourself for once (instead of that one random pic from a wedding in 2017), you’re in good hands. But now comes the big question: what the heck do I do before picture day?

Don’t stress. Prepping for your portrait session doesn’t have to be complicated. I’ve worked with folks from all over Metro Detroit—from Novi to downtown—who’ve shown up a little nervous and walked away loving their photos. Here’s how to make sure that’s you. So let's get into it: Your professional portrait session in Detroit, Novi, Northville and beyond.

1. Wear Something That Feels Like You (But With a Bit of Polish)

This isn’t the time to experiment with neon colors or clothes that don’t fit quite right. Pick something that feels comfortable, confident, and a little elevated. Think clean lines, solid colors, and textures that photograph well—like denim, knits, or a crisp button-up. Avoid busy patterns or logos (unless it’s your brand!).

If you’re not sure what to wear, bring a couple of options. I’d rather help you choose on-site than have you second-guess it all day.

2. Don’t Wait Until the Last Second

Try on your outfits a few days in advance. Steam or iron what needs it. Ladies—if you’re doing hair or makeup, consider giving yourself extra time. And for everyone: drink some water the day before. It’s not magic, but hydrated skin does photograph better. (Your future self will thank you.)

3. Trust the Location

Whether we’re shooting in a downtown Detroit, a park in Northville, or right in my Novi studio, know that I’ve picked the spot with lighting, comfort, and aesthetic in mind. If you have a place that means something to you, though—tell me! I love working in places that tell your story.

4. Don’t Overthink the Posing — That’s My Job

You don’t need to practice your “serious but approachable” face in the mirror. I guide you through every step. We’ll laugh, we’ll move around, and I’ll show you how to position yourself naturally. This isn’t stiff school picture day. We’re going for confident, relaxed, and authentically you. However, if you have ideas DO share them.

5. Sleep Is the Real Secret Weapon

If you do one thing: get a good night’s sleep. Not just for how you look, but for how you feel. Rested people are more relaxed in front of the camera. Add a playlist you love, some deep breaths, and I promise—it’ll feel way less awkward than you think.

Final Thoughts

A portrait session should feel like a little celebration of who you are right now—not a chore. Whether we’re meeting in Detroit, Northville, or Novi, I’ll help you show up like the real, awesome human you are.

So breathe easy. I’ve got the lights, the lens, and the know-how. You just bring you.
